The Avmar AV1 has
been designed to be visible using a radar frequency of
between 9320 and 9500Mhz with an operational range of 4
nautical miles when mounted 1.5 metres above sea level.
It meets the SOLAS regulations for use with the emergency
equipment in inflatable liferafts.
The internal radar reflector is manufactured from a material which is extremely
robust, flexible and has excellent reflecting properties. The top and side panel
of the inflatable ball are manufactured from High Visibility Yellow coloured
PVC which makes it more readily seen during rescue operations. The bottom panel
is manufactured from clear PVC so that a visual inspection of the internal radar
reflector material can be made.
The reflector can be inflated by mouth or by using the liferaft topping up pump.
A pump adapter is provided with each unit and the reflector is packed in an easily
sealed waterproof bag complete with instructions for inflating and deployment.
The reflector can be mounted on a three piece fibreglass pole which passes through
the aerial aperture in the canopy and secured to the raft by a lanyard. The bottom
section of the pole is fitted with an end cover to prevent damage to the liferaft
floor. An alternative method of fixing the reflector would be by means of a net
system incorporated in the canopy design of the life raft. |
